After consultation with a number of institutions, we came to the conclusion that possible dangers inherent in running an animal exchange on the Internet were outweighed by the potential advantages of speedily finding a safe and suitable home for surplus and wanted animals. Although we have some reservations about how this exchange should be operated, we believe that it is in the interests of all concerned, human and animal, that we give it a try.
EAZA distributes a quarterly list of animals for exchange amongst it's members. Unfortunately, at the moment, only a small proportion of those caring for wild animals in Europe are members of EAZA and therefore only a limited number of the available animals to exchange are included in this list. We do not intend to replace the excellent EAZA list, rather to supplement it by making "Tiertausch.de" available to all responsible zoos* and institutions which care for animals.
